Helping Bipolar-I Patients Maintain Stability - Psychiatry Advisor

Content sponsored by Otsuka America Pharmaceutical Inc. and Lundbeck for which Gregory W. Mattingly, MD, is a paid consultant. Despite advances in medicine and psychiatry, Bipolar I Disorder (BP-I) is still one of the most challenging mental health disorders to appropriately diagnose. Experienced clinicians who have worked in this field for years may miss the initial signs and symptoms that differentiate BP-I from other mental health conditions [i] . BP-I, which is a cyclical condition where patients experience bouts of depression and have had at least one manic episode, lasting at least seven days, affects nearly 4.8 million adults in the United States [ii] . According to one large metanalysis, it takes an average of six years for patients to receive a bipolar disorder diagnosis [iii] . However, once a diagnosis is made, providers can help patients work to achieve and maintain mood stability. When talking with my adult patients who are stable with BP-I, I find it important to st

New Antipsychotic That Causes Less Weight Gain Gets FDA Approval - Everyday Health

Image
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of a once-daily atypical antipsychotic drug, Lybalvi (olanzapine and samidorphan), to treat adults with schizophrenia and adults with bipolar I disorder. According to its manufacturer, Alkermes, the combination of olanzapine and samidorphan causes significantly less weight gain than traditional Zyprexa (olanzapine), one of the most widely prescribed antipsychotic drugs for treating schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder. "The weight gain on olanzapine has limited its use in patients, due to reluctance of healthcare providers to prescribe it and as a result of patients discontinuing the medication. This is unfortunate since olanzapine is one of the most effective antipsychotics on the market," says René S. Kahn, MD, PhD, who is a professor and chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral health system at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Dr. Kahn was one of the researchers

Can a Yeast Infection Cause Bleeding? - Verywell Health

Image
Many people are familiar with the symptoms of yeast infections, but they may not know that it can cause a little bleeding. If those who have a yeast infection notice blood after wiping, it might be alarming and make them wonder if they have a yeast infection or something more serious. Yeast infections (also called candidiasis) commonly occur in women when there is an overgrowth of the Candida fungus. When it affects the vagina and the tissues at the opening of the vagina (vulva), it's called a vaginal yeast infection. The human body has Candida at all times and the immune system is tasked with controlling its growth. If your vaginal chemistry gets thrown off balance, the normal yeast that live in your vagina can grow too much and lead to an infection. This can be caused by many different things, such as a weakened immune system, pregnancy, and even normal hormonal changes during a menstrual cycle. Vasopressor and inotrope treatment for septic shock: An umbrella review of reviews. - Physician's Weekly

To review the characteristics, findings and quality of systematic reviews (SRs) on the effect of any vasopressor/inotrope on outcomes in adult patients with sepsis compared with either no treatment, another vasopressor or inotrope or fluids. We systematically searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed and Embase (January 1993-March 2021). Descriptive statistics were used. Among the 28 SRs identified, mortality was the primary outcome in most (26/28) and mortality was usually (23/28) studied using randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Fifteen SRs focused exclusively on patients with sepsis or septic shock. Sepsis and septic shock were always grouped for the analysis. Publication bias was consistently low when studied. The most consistent findings were a survival advantage with norepinephrine versus dopamine, which disappeared in analyses restricted to 28-day mortality, and more arrhythmias with dopamine. However, these analyses were dominated by a single study. Only

Apple cider vinegar for Candida: Does it work? - Medical News Today

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here's our process. Candida is a type of yeast that lives naturally inside the human body and on the skin. Most of the time, it does not cause any problems. However, an overgrowth of Candida can lead to infections in warm, moist areas of the body. Several laboratory studies have shown that apple cider vinegar (ACV) has antifungal properties. This has led to speculation that the vinegar may be useful in treating Candida infections. This article outlines research on the antifungal effects of ACV. We also provide tips on how to use the vinegar to treat Candida infections, and the possible risks involved. There are hundreds of species of Candida yeast. Some of these species live naturally inside the body and on the skin. Most of the time, other organisms keep Candida numbers in check. However, in certain circumstances, Candida ca

Fortunately, oral thrush is typically an easily cured infection. There are also steps you can take to reduce your risk for thrush, even if you use an inhaler frequently. Read on to learn more. Oral thrush is an infection that occurs in your mouth. When you have oral thrush, a fungus called Candida grows in your mouth. You might also see oral thrush referred to by its medical names, candidiasis or oropharyngeal candidiasis. The infection causes white or yellow bumps to grow on the inside of your cheeks and on your tongue. Thrush is generally mild and often goes away quickly. However, people with weakened immune systems might have more trouble fighting the infection. In rare cases, this can allow the thrush to spread to other parts of the body and lead to serious complications. Thrush is most o
