Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) cause chronic viral infections, and the seroprevalence ranges from 15% to 100%. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 years had HSV-1 infection, and genital herpes caused by HSV-2 affected an estimated 491 million people aged 15 to 49 years worldwide in 2016. 1 The seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 were 47.8% and 11.9%, respectively, among individuals aged 14 to 49 years in the United States. 2 Substantial racial and ethnic disparities in HSV-2 infection exist. The cumulative lifetime incidence of HSV-2 reaches 25% in White women, 20% in White men, 80% in Black women, and 60% in Black men. 3 PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND TRANSMISSION Herpes viruses possess an internal core containing double-stranded DNA surrounded by tegument and a lipid envelope. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 are shed on mucosal surfaces or in oral or genital secretions and transmitted through inoculation of the virus onto mucosal surfaces or abraded skin.

What Is Zegerid? Zegerid ( omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate ) is a prescription combination drug consisting of two primary ingredients: a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), omeprazole, and an antacid, sodium bicarbonate. It is used to treat various gastric disorders. The combination of the two products is highly effective at reducing gastric acid production in adults 18 and older. For context, a PPI is a medication that works by reducing the amount of stomach acid made by glands in the lining of your stomach. Moreover, the ingredient omeprazole can also be categorized as an antisecretory agent. Antisecretory are compounds that are used for the long-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic disorder of the esophagus that results in a decrease of the low esophageal sphincter (LES) barrier tone, leading to acid reflux, epithelial (thin tissue forming the outer layer of a body's surface) erosion, and hyperplasia (enlargement of an organ o

Amped-up Enterobacterales Debate - Contagionlive.com

It is late Friday afternoon and a new medical intern assumes the care of 2 patients with gram-negative bacteremia in the intensive care unit. Both patients have been empirically treated with piperacillin-tazobactam and remain critically ill. The microbiology laboratory updates the culture results as Enterobacter cloacae complex for the first patient and Serratia marcescens for the other. At this point, the intern vaguely recalls the SPACE or SPICE acronyms (SPACE: Serratia , Pseudomonas , Acinetobacter , Citrobacter , Enterobacter ; SPICE: Serratia , Providencia , Indole-positive Proteus , Citrobacter , Enterobacter ), but after a quick literature search, realizes that neither provides a clear answer as to which organisms are included. Even more perplexing, the available primary literature demonstrates conflicting data for optimal treatment. More confused than ever, the intern calls his infectious diseases colleagues with a series of questions: Are these really AmpC-producing organism
